Newcastle vs Espanyol entertained a capacity crowd at St James’ Park on Friday night as their pre-season friendly ended in a 2-2 draw. Both sides demonstrated attacking intent and competitive edge, offering a promising glimpse ahead of the new Premier League and La Liga campaigns.

    Early Exchange of Goals

Espanyol broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Edu Expósito received the ball just outside the box and curled a clinical effort past Aaron Ramsdale. The Spanish midfielder’s finish highlighted Espanyol’s sharpness in transition and silenced the home faithful.

Newcastle responded swiftly. Four minutes later, Matt Targett met Lewis Miley’s accurate cross with a powerful header that beat goalkeeper Ángel Fortuño. The Magpies’ immediate reply injected life into the contest and restored parity at 1-1.

    Penalty Drama and Key Saves

Early in the second half, Matt Targett was adjudged to have clipped Roberto Fernández in the penalty area. Javi Puado stepped up for Espanyol, only to see Ramsdale produce a decisive low save. The stop underlined Ramsdale’s confidence and provided a crucial morale boost for Eddie Howe’s side.

Espanyol’s goalkeeper Fortuño also impressed, denying Joelinton with a strong one-on-one block. These moments of individual brilliance emphasised the evenly matched nature of Newcastle vs Espanyol.

    Second-Half Goals and Tactical Adjustments

Newcastle took the lead on 77 minutes. Seung-soo Park applied pressure deep in the Espanyol half, forcing a loose pass. Jacob Murphy capitalised and calmly slotted home to make it 2-1. Howe’s changes paid dividends as fresh legs maintained attacking momentum.

Just as Newcastle supporters dared to celebrate a victory, Kike García rose highest to nod in a late equaliser in the 89th minute. The former Middlesbrough striker showcased Espanyol’s aerial threat and ensured the teams finished level.

    Standout Performances

Aaron Ramsdale’s penalty save proved decisive. His confident positioning and sharp reflexes will bolster his claim for the season opener. Matt Targett combined defensive solidity with attacking contribution, scoring and committing the penalty that kept the match alive.

On Espanyol’s side, Edu Expósito impressed with vision and technique. Roberto Fernández marshalled the backline effectively in only his second appearance since joining from Braga. Kike García’s late header demonstrated his poacher’s instinct inside the box.

    Managerial Reflections

Eddie Howe praised his squad’s resilience and fitness levels following the draw. He highlighted the value of competitive minutes for younger players seeking to push for first-team roles. Howe also commended Ramsdale’s performance, suggesting the loan signing could feature heavily this season.

Espanyol head coach Vicente Moreno was pleased with his side’s attacking fluidity and response to conceding twice. He emphasised the benefit of facing Premier League opposition and noted valuable lessons in defensive organisation and set-piece defending.

    Looking Ahead

Newcastle vs Espanyol provided a compelling rehearsal ahead of competitive action. Newcastle will travel to Aston Villa for their Premier League curtain-raiser on 16 August. Espanyol return to Spain to prepare for a test at Real Sociedad in La Liga next weekend. The shared victory of fitness, sharpness and confidence will serve both clubs well as they chase silverware in 2025–26.
